UXBRIDGE, Worcester County, Mass., Oct. 5, 2026 — A 15-year-old died after being thrown from a car Saturday night, October 3, in a single-vehicle crash in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, police said. The teen was a student at Uxbridge High School, according to authorities.

Uxbridge police said emergency crews were called to the 685 block of Chocolog Road for a report of a crash involving a Ford Focus. The car reportedly left the roadway and struck a utility pole, police said.

The teen was found ejected from the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, according to the department. Two other occupants were in the car at the time; it remains unclear whether they were hurt, police said.

The 680 block of Chocolog Road was closed for a period Saturday night while crews worked the scene, Uxbridge police reported on social media. The crash remains under investigation, and officers have asked anyone who saw it happen to call them at 508-278-7755.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.

Single-Vehicle Crashes and What the Numbers Show

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,947,298 passenger-vehicle occupants were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. That figure covers every kind of crash on the road, but it helps explain why a single car leaving its lane, as happened here, can still end in serious harm: most crashes involve only one vehicle losing control.

Ejection is one of the clearest predictors of a crash becoming fatal. When a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a fixed object like a pole or tree, the sudden stop can throw an unrestrained occupant through a window or door opening. Seat belts remain the single biggest factor in whether someone stays inside the vehicle during that kind of impact.

Teen drivers and passengers show up at higher rates in these crashes than older age groups, in part because of less experience recognizing when a car is drifting off the road or reacting to it in time. Rural two-lane roads, like many in Worcester County, add another layer of risk because of narrower shoulders and fixed roadside objects close to the travel lane.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are most common in car accidents like this one?

Head and spinal injuries are common when someone is ejected from a vehicle, along with broken bones and internal injuries from striking the ground or another object outside the car.

What typically causes a single-car crash like this?

Common factors include speed, loss of control on a curve, driver inexperience, road conditions, and distraction, though the specific cause in any case is determined by investigators, not assumed.

How much does seat belt use matter in a crash like this?

A great deal. Occupants who are properly belted are far less likely to be ejected during a crash, and ejection substantially raises the odds of a fatal outcome.
