VALLEJO, Solano County, Calif., Oct. 22, 2026 — A pedestrian died early Thursday morning, October 22, after being struck on the connector ramp from westbound Interstate 80 to eastbound Interstate 780 in Vallejo, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The call came in around 2:34 a.m. reporting a vehicle, described as a white sedan, possibly a Tesla, had struck a pedestrian on the connector ramp, the CHP log shows. A car consistent with that description was later reported stopped on the right shoulder nearby. Medical units and Vallejo Fire were requested within minutes.
Responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene at 2:49 a.m. The agency confirmed the fatality shortly before 3 a.m.
The crash shut down the number 2 and number 3 lanes on the connector, and the CHP issued a SigAlert just after 3 a.m. for the westbound I-80 to eastbound I-780 transition, warning of an unknown duration for the closure. All lanes on the ramp were briefly stopped during the initial response.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common when a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle?
Pedestrians hit by cars often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal trauma. Severity usually depends on vehicle speed and where the impact occurs on the body.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Common factors include driver inattention, poor visibility at night, pedestrians in travel lanes or shoulders where they aren't expected, and impairment on either side. Investigators typically review lighting, speed, and sightlines before drawing conclusions.
Does speed make much difference in whether a pedestrian survives?
Yes. Survival rates drop sharply as vehicle speed increases, which is one reason crashes on freeway ramps and connectors, where speeds are higher, tend to be more severe than those on local streets.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur at night or in low-light conditions, often where pedestrians cross or stand in areas not designed for foot traffic, including freeway shoulders, ramps, and connector roads.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Vallejo, CA
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash should call 911 immediately so medical help and law enforcement can respond. If you're a driver involved, stay at the scene, turn on hazard lights, and wait for officers to arrive and document the incident. Avoid moving an injured person unless there's an immediate danger, such as oncoming traffic.
Even if injuries seem minor at first, a prompt medical evaluation is important, since some injuries from vehicle-pedestrian collisions aren't immediately obvious. Witnesses should keep contact information available for investigators, and anyone with video or photos of the scene should preserve them in case they're needed for the official report. Residents can also request a copy of the CHP's completed crash report once it's finalized.
