Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Higher speeds mean more force on impact and less time for a driver to stop or swerve, which raises the likelihood of severe or fatal injury compared to lower-speed crashes.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur at or near intersections and crosswalks, though a significant number also happen when a pedestrian crosses outside a marked crossing or in areas with limited lighting.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Reduced visibility at night makes it harder for drivers to see people on foot, and a large share of fatal pedestrian crashes nationally occur during evening and nighttime hours.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Call 911 immediately, try not to move if injured, get medical evaluation even for injuries that seem minor, and get the names of any witnesses or responding officers for the police report.
