Montebello, CA (July 20, 2026) — A car caught fire on Saturday, July 18, after a collision involving a black Honda Accord and a white Corvette on eastbound State Route 60 near Paramount Boulevard in Montebello. The Honda was reported on fire in the center divider shortly after noon, according to dispatch records.

Two people were seen out of a vehicle on the right shoulder, and bystanders were reported helping at the scene. A witness told dispatchers the Corvette may have caused the wreck, though that has not been confirmed.

Multiple emergency units were dispatched to fight the fire and manage traffic on the freeway. Whether anyone was injured has not been released.

The exact cause of the accident remains unconfirmed as this report was filed. We hope everyone involved is safe.

Why Do Vehicles Sometimes Catch Fire After a Hard Hit?

Vehicle fires don’t start on their own after a hard impact. They usually need a fuel source, an ignition source, and oxygen all coming together at once. A ruptured fuel line, a damaged battery, or a spark from twisted metal hitting metal can be enough to set off a fire in the right conditions.

Modern vehicles carry several flammable fluids besides gasoline, including oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. If any of these lines are torn open during a hard hit, the fluid can leak onto a hot engine part and ignite within seconds. This is one reason fires can start well after a vehicle has already come to a stop.

Bystanders who see a vehicle fire are generally encouraged to keep a safe distance rather than approach the vehicle. Flames can spread quickly, and heat can cause glass or metal parts to fail without warning. Calling for emergency help right away and staying back gives trained crews the best chance to control the fire safely.
