Meriden, CT (May 30, 2026) – A 4-year-old was hurt Thursday evening after being struck by a family vehicle in the parking lot of a CVS on Broad Street in Meriden.
According to police, officers were called around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, after receiving a report that a bleeding child had been placed into a vehicle that then left the parking lot. When emergency units arrived, they learned the child was already receiving treatment at MidState Medical Center for a traumatic head injury.
Investigators later determined that the child’s mother had been driving the family vehicle. Police said she believed the child was already inside before she began moving the vehicle. The child was then injured. Video footage reviewed by investigators supported the account provided by the family.
The child was later transferred to Connecticut Children’s Hospital in Hartford. Police said the family has cooperated fully, and the child was reported to be in stable condition. No additional details about the collision were available at the time of publication.
Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding what happened Thursday evening. We hope the young child continues making a steady recovery.
How Parking Lot Pedestrian Injuries Often Occur
Parking lots can present unique risks because vehicles and pedestrians share the same space in close proximity. Unlike highways or major roads, drivers in parking lots often focus on finding parking spaces, watching for other vehicles, or navigating tight traffic patterns. This can make it easier to lose sight of a person walking nearby, especially a small child.
Children are particularly vulnerable because they may move unpredictably and can be difficult to see from inside larger vehicles. Visibility can also be reduced by parked cars, shopping carts, or other obstacles. In many parking lot injury cases, investigators review surveillance footage, vehicle positioning, driver actions, and pedestrian movements to determine exactly how the injury occurred. These details help provide a clearer picture of what happened and may identify ways similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
