Why Urban Pedestrian Crashes Often Result in Serious Injuries
Pedestrian crashes in urban areas can lead to severe injuries because people on foot have little protection during an impact. Even at moderate speeds, collisions between vehicles and pedestrians can result in significant trauma requiring emergency medical treatment.
Roadways with multiple travel lanes, frequent turning movements, and heavy traffic volumes may present additional risks for pedestrians. Factors such as visibility, traffic flow, crossing locations, and driver attention can all influence the likelihood of a collision. Transportation safety studies often show that pedestrian injury severity increases as vehicle speed rises, making awareness and caution especially important in busy city corridors.
