Vernalis, CA (January 23, 2026) – A serious collision involving a Toyota Prius and a semi-truck resulted in major injuries early Friday morning on S Koster Rd just south of W Vernalis Rd. The crash occurred around 6:48 a.m. and prompted an extensive emergency response from local fire and medical crews.
According to California Highway Patrol logs, the Prius became wedged beneath the semi-truck’s trailer, which measured approximately 40 feet in length. The semi was reported to be empty at the time of the crash. Fire personnel arrived and confirmed that both northbound and southbound lanes were initially blocked as crews worked to access and extract the injured party from the severely damaged vehicle.
Due to the severity of the crash, heavy-duty tow equipment was requested to remove the Prius from under the trailer. Emergency responders later reclassified the incident as involving major injuries. Specific details regarding the condition of the driver or passengers have not yet been released.
The southbound lane was reopened as of 8:14 a.m., but the northbound side remained closed for cleanup and investigation.
