VERO BEACH, Indian River County, Fla., Oct. 23, 2026 — A 60-year-old Vero Beach man died on Thursday morning, October 22, after his SUV collided with a tractor-trailer at an intersection in Indian River County. The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 49th Street and 66th Avenue.

A 2026 Freightliner truck-tractor pulling a flatbed trailer was stopped at a sign on westbound 49th Street and attempting a left turn. Troopers said the truck moved into the path of a 2006 Dodge Durango heading north on 66th Avenue. The front of the SUV struck the trailer's left side.

The Durango's driver was taken to Health First's Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he was pronounced dead at 8:02 a.m., the report said. As of the report, his next of kin had not yet been notified.

The truck's driver, a 59-year-old Jacksonville man, was not reported injured. The Florida Highway Patrol said its traffic homicide investigation remains open, and no cause has been confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does driver fatigue play a role in truck crashes?

It can. Commercial drivers usually cover long distances and irregular hours, and fatigue can slow reaction time at intersections and during turns. Investigators typically review hours-of-service logs as part of a crash probe.

Why do large trucks need more distance to stop or turn safely?

A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh far more than a passenger vehicle, which means it takes longer to slow down and needs more room to complete turns. That extra weight and length can make intersections especially risky when a truck is turning across oncoming traffic.

What makes truck crashes different from typical car accidents?

The size and weight difference between a truck and a passenger vehicle means that even a side impact, like the one described here, can cause serious harm to the smaller vehicle's occupants.
