VICTORVILLE, San Bernardino County, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 — A pedestrian suffered serious injuries Tuesday afternoon, October 13, after being struck by a semi tractor-trailer on northbound Interstate 15 in Victorville. The person was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 3:06 p.m. on northbound I-15 just past the La Mesa Nisqualli Road exit. Paramedics took the pedestrian to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley.

The pedestrian reportedly suffered blunt force trauma and facial fractures.

The CHP's Victorville office is investigating the crash and is expected to release a preliminary report. We hope the injured pedestrian recovers fully.

What the Numbers Show About Pedestrian Deaths on California Roads

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrian fatalities decreased from 1,213 in 2022 to 1,106 in 2023. That drop of roughly 9% suggests statewide safety efforts, from lighting improvements to lower speed limits in some corridors, may be having an effect, though pedestrian deaths remain far above pre-pandemic levels in most counties.

Freeways present a particular challenge within that broader picture. Pedestrians on highways are typically not expected by drivers moving at high speed, and shoulders or medians offer little protection. Crashes involving a pedestrian and a commercial truck also tend to produce more severe outcomes than those involving passenger vehicles, simply because of the size and weight difference.

Investigators looking at these incidents often focus on why a pedestrian was in the roadway in the first place, whether due to a disabled vehicle, an earlier incident, or another reason. That detail shapes both the safety response and, often, how the case is ultimately closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should someone do immediately after being struck as a pedestrian?

Get to a safe location if possible, call 911, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, including internal trauma or fractures, are not immediately obvious.

Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?

In California, pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and pedestrians both carry a duty to exercise caution, particularly in high speed areas like freeways where pedestrians are not expected.

How can drivers watch for pedestrians in unexpected places, like freeways?

Staying alert near disabled vehicles, work zones, and freeway shoulders, and reducing speed when visibility is limited, gives drivers more time to react if someone is in the roadway.

What injuries are most common when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle?

Common injuries include fractures, head and facial trauma, and internal injuries, with severity often tied to the vehicle's size and speed at impact.

Seek a full medical evaluation even if you feel largely uninjured, since some trauma takes hours or days to surface.
