Eastman, GA (June 10, 2026) – Four people were hurt on Tuesday afternoon, June 9, after a three-vehicle wreck along Georgia 87 in Eastman that left a Volkswagen Beetle engulfed in fire.

The chain-reaction crash happened around 2:05 p.m. near Legion Drive and Griffin Avenue. According to state troopers, a white Nissan Altima was traveling east on Legion Drive and attempted to turn onto Georgia 87 when it failed to yield to a northbound black BMW SUV.

After the initial collision, the Altima crossed into the southbound lanes and was struck head-on by a blue Volkswagen Beetle. The BMW then left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole.

Emergency units arrived shortly afterward and found the Volkswagen burning. The driver of the BMW received treatment at the roadside, while the Altima driver and two people inside the Beetle were taken to Dodge County Hospital with various injuries.

All four people involved are expected to survive. Names and ages had not been released as of Wednesday, June 10. Troopers are still working to determine all factors that led to the chain of impacts.

We hope those injured in the roadway tragedy make a full and steady recovery.

Why Head-on Highway Crashes Often Lead to Serious Injuries

Head-on roadway collisions are among the most dangerous types of traffic collisions because both vehicles are often moving at significant speeds before impact. The force generated during these crashes can cause severe vehicle damage and increase the risk of fire, especially when fuel systems or electrical components are compromised.

Intersections and highway access points are common locations for these collisions. Drivers turning across traffic may have limited visibility or misjudge the speed of approaching vehicles. Multi-vehicle crashes can also become more dangerous when one vehicle is pushed into another lane after the first point of contact.

Seat belts, airbags, and modern vehicle safety systems can reduce harm, but serious injuries may still occur due to the amount of force involved. Burn hazards and secondary roadway dangers can further complicate rescue and medical efforts after a major highway crash.
