Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Many pedestrian crashes happen when a driver fails to see a person crossing or entering a roadway, often at intersections, in parking lots, or near driveways. Distraction, limited visibility and turning vehicles are common factors.
Does the speed of the vehicle matter for how badly a pedestrian is hurt?
Yes. Even modest increases in vehicle speed raise the risk of serious injury or death for a pedestrian who is struck, because there is less time for a driver to stop and more force involved in the impact.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
A large share occur at or near intersections and in residential areas where foot traffic and vehicle traffic mix, including parking lots and streets near schools or neighborhoods.
Are pedestrian accidents more likely at night?
Reduced visibility after dark does raise risk, though crashes also happen in daylight, particularly in areas with heavy pedestrian activity like intersections and parking lots.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Waldorf, Maryland
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately so emergency crews can respond. Do not move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger, since movement can worsen certain injuries. Stay on the scene until officers arrive and provide them with what you observed.
Anyone involved, including a parent or guardian of a child, should make sure a full medical evaluation happens even if injuries seem minor at first, since some symptoms can take hours to appear. Keeping records of medical visits and any instructions from first responders can help later if questions arise about what happened. If you have photos, dashcam footage or other information related to a pedestrian crash in Waldorf, local authorities often rely on that kind of tip to piece together events.
