WALLER, Waller County, Texas, Oct. 1, 2026 — A construction worker was injured on Wednesday morning, September 30, when two construction vehicles and a passenger vehicle crashed on eastbound U.S. 290 near the Harris County line. The crash shut down the eastbound highway for several hours.
The crash happened around 10 a.m. about a half mile from the FM 362 exit, Waller Police Chief Michael Lopez said. The injured worker was flown to a hospital by LifeFlight and was not in critical condition.
The cause of the crash had not been released as of Wednesday. Waller police responded to the scene, Harris County Sheriff's Office Lt. Terry Garza said.
Houston TranStar's traffic map showed the crash backing up eastbound lanes near Field Store Road by around 9:51 a.m. About an hour after the crash, traffic was routed through the left shoulder, and drivers were asked to stay patient and cautious while the investigation continued. TranStar no longer listed the closure shortly after noon.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.
When Work Zone Crashes Are Most Likely on Highways Like US 290
Work zone crashes tend to cluster around the hours when crews are actively present and traffic volume is still heavy, mid-morning and midday stretches on busy corridors, rather than overnight, when lane closures are better marked and traffic is thinner. Drivers moving at highway speed frequently have little warning before they reach slowed or merging traffic near equipment and workers.
Visibility and driver attention both play a role. Glare, construction dust, and shifting lane markings can make it harder for drivers to judge gaps between vehicles, and distraction or following too closely becomes more dangerous when vehicles ahead are slowing for a work zone. Fatigue matters less at midday than overnight, but sudden speed changes still catch drivers off guard.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Work zone crashes make up a portion of that total each year, usually tied less to the time of day and more to how quickly traffic can adjust to sudden slowdowns.
