How Investigators Piece Together an Intersection Crash
Crashes where one vehicle crosses a highway into the path of another typically draw a careful look at sight lines, speed, and timing. Troopers and deputies measure skid marks, vehicle damage, and road conditions at the scene, then compare that physical evidence against driver and witness accounts. Wet pavement, as in this case, is usually one of several factors reviewed, not an automatic explanation.
A full written report can take investigators weeks to complete. Agencies wait on data pulls from vehicle systems, formal statements, and sometimes mechanical inspections before concluding. If any toxicology testing is involved, state lab turnaround alone can add several weeks beyond the initial response.
That pace is normal, not a sign that anything is being withheld. Agencies generally hold back a driver's fault determination until the full file is closed, which protects everyone named in the report from premature conclusions.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023.
