What Factors Can Affect Pedestrian Safety on Busy Roadways?
Pedestrian accidents often occur on roads with heavy traffic, multiple lanes, or nearby highway access points. Areas close to ramps or major intersections can be especially challenging due to higher speeds and frequent lane changes.
Visibility also affects safety. Poor lighting, weather conditions, and obstructions can make it harder for drivers to see people crossing the street. At the same time, pedestrians may misjudge vehicle speed or distance when crossing busy roads.
Road design plays a part as well. Crosswalk placement, traffic signals, and signage can influence how safely pedestrians and drivers share the road. In areas with limited crossing points, people may attempt to cross in unsafe locations, increasing the risk of a serious crash.
