Cahokia Heights, IL (June 26, 2026) – A 66-year-old Waterloo man lost his life, and six other people were hurt in a two-vehicle collision on Illinois Route 157 near Illinois Route 15 in Cahokia Heights on Wednesday morning.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:41 a.m. on June 24. According to Cahokia Heights police, an SUV and a pickup truck towing a trailer were involved. Emergency units took multiple people to a nearby hospital, including Michael A. Kuhlmann, who was reported to be unconscious and not breathing at the roadway.

Kuhlmann was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m. The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office said he died from blunt-force trauma. Six other people received medical treatment for injuries sustained in the collision.

The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit assisted with the investigation as the roadway remained closed for a portion of the day. The investigation into the collision remains active as officials continue gathering evidence.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Michael A. Kuhlmann while wishing those hurt a steady recovery.

Why Reconstruction Teams Are Called to Serious Highway Collisions

When a crash results in a fatality or multiple injuries, specialized reconstruction teams may be asked to examine the roadway. These investigators document vehicle positions, measure tire marks, inspect debris patterns, and review damage to determine how the collision unfolded.

The review may also include photographs, witness statements, electronic vehicle data, and roadway conditions at the time of the collision. In some cases, medical findings and vehicle inspections provide additional information that helps establish the sequence of events. Because these investigations require detailed analysis, conclusions are usually not available immediately. The information gathered can also help identify factors that may improve roadway safety and reduce the likelihood of similar collisions in the future.
