Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Head-on impacts, higher speeds, and a vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic all raise the chance that a crash will be fatal, since the forces involved are much harder for occupants to survive.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the energy involved in a collision, which usually means more serious injuries even in a crash that might otherwise be survivable.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
A seat belt keeps occupants from being thrown into the dashboard, windshield, or out of the vehicle entirely, which lowers the risk of fatal injury in a head-on or rollover crash.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families typically can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating agency and may want to contact the coroner's or medical examiner's office for information on next steps.
