West Liberty, OH (May 19, 2026) – A 19-year-old Bellefontaine man was seriously injured Sunday morning following a rollover crash along US Hwy 68 near West Liberty.
According to reports, Tory Johnson was driving a 2022 Honda Ridgeline northbound near the 8000 block of US Hwy 68 when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway just south of West Liberty. The pickup struck a mailbox with its passenger-side mirror before continuing off the roadway and hitting another mailbox farther along the route.
Investigators said the vehicle then traveled through multiple residential yards, crossing lawns and striking an elevated culvert. It continued into another yard where it hit a flower bed containing a large landscaping rock. The impact caused the pickup to overturn onto its side before coming to rest near a driveway.
Emergency units responded to the scene and transported Johnson to Mary Rutan Hospital with suspected serious injuries.
Authorities said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash at this time.
The incident remains under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, and more details will be released as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they continue to recover.
What Investigators Review in Rollover Crashes Involving Road Departure
Rollover crashes often begin when a vehicle leaves its lane and enters roadside terrain such as grass, ditches, or residential property. Investigators typically examine steering input, tire marks, and points of impact to determine how the vehicle lost control.
In cases involving multiple roadside strikes, damage patterns to mailboxes, landscaping features, and culverts can help reconstruct the vehicle’s path before overturning. These details often indicate the driver’s speed, direction changes, and recovery attempts.
Medical reports are also reviewed to assess the severity of injuries, especially when a vehicle rolls onto its side or roof. Road conditions and roadside obstacles may also be considered when determining how the crash sequence unfolded.
