Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a vehicle roll over?
A rollover usually happens when a vehicle loses traction and its momentum shifts sideways, usually after a sharp steering movement, a tire blowout, or striking a curb or soft shoulder at speed. Taller vehicles with a higher center of gravity tip more easily than low sedans.
Do certain roads see more rollovers than others?
Rollovers happen more commonly on roads with curves, uneven pavement, or narrow shoulders, where a driver has less room to correct after drifting off the travel lane.
What injuries typically result from a rollover crash?
Occupants can suffer head and neck injuries, broken bones, and internal injuries, particularly if they are thrown against the roof or ejected. Seat belts and proper restraint use lower the risk of severe injury.
What can drivers do to stay safer in case of a rollover?
Keeping tires properly inflated, avoiding sudden sharp turns at speed, and wearing a seat belt at all times are basic steps that improve the odds of surviving a rollover.
