Where School Bus Crashes Tend to Happen
Crashes involving school buses often cluster at rural and suburban intersections where a state route or county road crosses a smaller local street, frequently without a signal to control turning traffic. These crossings ask drivers to judge gaps in fast-moving traffic on their own, and a bus entering or stopped at one of these junctions can be hard to see until a driver is already close.
Two-lane highways that carry higher speeds but still host regular cross traffic, pickups, and bus stops add another layer of risk. Unlike multi-lane arterials with turn lanes and longer sightlines, these roads often give drivers less time to react when a bus is slowing, turning, or stopped ahead.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 48 drivers and 65 passengers in school transportation vehicles were killed from 2014 through 2023. Many of those crashes occurred at intersections rather than on open stretches of road, reflecting how turning movements and crossing traffic remain a persistent factor in bus-involved collisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do immediately after a crash involving a school bus?
Call 911, stay with the vehicle if it's safe, and avoid moving anyone who may be injured unless there's an immediate danger like fire. Wait for police and EMS to assess the scene before exchanging information or discussing fault.
How do road and weather conditions factor into these crashes?
Wet pavement, glare, and reduced visibility can extend stopping distances and make it harder for drivers to judge a bus's speed or position, especially at intersections without signals.
Where do most traffic crashes occur?
National data consistently shows intersections, whether signalized or not, account for a large share of crashes, since they require multiple vehicles to interpret right-of-way at the same moment.
What to Do After a School Bus Crash in White Township, NJ
Anyone involved in or witnessing a bus crash in White Township should call 911 immediately and let dispatchers know if children or other passengers are on board. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation afterward is a good idea, since some injuries from sudden stops or impacts don't show symptoms right away.
Parents of students who ride buses in the area should ask the school district for official updates instead of relying on secondhand accounts. If you were a passenger or driver involved, keep records of any medical visits and follow up with your doctor if new symptoms appear in the days after the crash.
