BELLS, Grayson County, Texas, Oct. 22, 2026 — Five people were hurt, three of them critically, when an RV and a tractor-trailer collided on Highway 82 near the Lucky Stop truck stop on Tuesday afternoon, October 20.
The RV reportedly sideswiped the tractor-trailer, and a car then struck the back of the rig, Whitesboro Fire Chief Jeff Patterson said. The crash was caught on a surveillance camera at a nearby truck tire shop.
Of the five people hurt, three suffered critical injuries. A young girl riding in the RV and the truck driver were among those with minor injuries. One patient was flown by CareFlight to a Dallas hospital, while two others were taken by ground ambulance to Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Patterson said.
Patterson said crews called a second-alarm fire response to bring more trucks to the scene and activated a mass casualty plan to get additional ambulances on site. Highway 82 was shut down for more than four hours while crews worked to clear the wreckage.
The crash remains under investigation, and no cause has been determined. The truck stop said in a statement that it hoped the video would raise awareness about the stretch of road, which it described as busy with semi-trucks entering and exiting the station.
We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes truck accidents more dangerous than car crashes?
Large trucks weigh many times more than passenger vehicles and take longer to stop. When a truck is involved in a collision, the size and weight difference usually means more severe injuries for people in smaller vehicles.
What are a truck's blind spots and why do they matter?
Tractor-trailers have large blind spots along both sides, directly behind the trailer, and close in front of the cab. Vehicles in these zones may be invisible to the driver, which can contribute to sideswipe and merging collisions like the one reported here.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partially or fully under a truck's trailer during a collision, usually because the trailer sits higher than a car's crumple zones. Rear and side underride guards are designed to reduce the risk but don't eliminate it.
What are common causes of large-truck accidents?
Driver fatigue, following too closely, improper lane changes, and mechanical failure are frequently cited factors in truck crashes. Investigators typically review vehicle data, witness accounts, and roadway conditions before determining a cause.
What to Do After a Truck Accident in Whitesboro, TX
If you're involved in a crash with a truck or RV, try to move to a safe spot away from traffic and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since adrenaline can mask pain from impact. Take photos of the vehicles, the road, and any visible damage if you're able to safely do so, and get contact information from anyone who witnessed what happened. Keep a copy of the police or fire department report once it's available, since it usually includes details that aren't clear in the moment. Give yourself time to rest and follow up with a doctor if new symptoms appear in the days after the crash.
