Wichita, KS (January 12, 2026) – Two teenagers suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon on the north side of Wichita, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Interstate 235, near the overpass above North Broadway Avenue. Authorities say a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling south on I-235 when the teenage driver, 16-year-old Juan Lopez Jimenez, became distracted while reaching for an item inside the vehicle. He lost control of the car, which veered into the inside concrete bridge barrier.
Jimenez, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, sustained serious injuries and was transported by emergency medical services to Wesley Medical Center. His passenger, 17-year-old Ayelen Dominguez-Pena, was also seriously injured but had been wearing a seat belt. She was transported to the same hospital for further care.
No other vehicles were involved in the collision, and no additional injuries were reported. The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash, and no charges or citations have been announced at this time.
Our thoughts are with both teens and their families. We wish them strength and a full recovery during this difficult time.
