WILDWOOD, Sumter County, Fla., Oct. 22, 2026 — An overturned dump truck shut down the southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike early on Thursday morning, October 22, after a crash that injured one driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. near mile marker 304. The dump truck was traveling northbound when a tractor-trailer hit it from behind. The impact pushed the dump truck through the guardrail and into the southbound lanes, where it rolled over.
The dump truck had been hauling gravel or milled asphalt, which spilled across both southbound lanes. The overturned vehicle also blocked the roadway. Southbound Florida's Turnpike was closed at State Road 93 and U.S. 301 while crews worked to clear the wreckage and the spilled material.
The dump truck driver was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The roadway reopened around 7:15 a.m. The circumstances of the initial collision remain under investigation.
We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do large trucks need so much distance to stop?
Loaded trucks can weigh tens of thousands of pounds more than a passenger car, and that extra weight means much longer stopping distances, especially at highway speeds or when the driver has to brake suddenly for slowed traffic.
What makes truck crashes more dangerous than typical car accidents?
The size and weight difference between a truck and a passenger vehicle means more force is transferred in a collision, and cargo like gravel or construction material can spill and create secondary hazards for other drivers.
What are a truck's blind spots and why do they matter?
Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, behind the trailer, and just in front of the cab. Drivers should avoid lingering in these areas and pass with enough clearance to be visible in the truck's mirrors.
What to Do After a Truck Accident in Wildwood, Florida
If you're involved in or witness a truck crash in Wildwood, stay in your vehicle if it's unsafe to exit, especially on a highway shoulder, and wait for troopers to direct traffic safely. Seek medical attention promptly, even for injuries that don't seem serious at first, since some symptoms take hours to appear.
