Frequently Asked Questions
Why are crashes with several vehicles usually harder to sort out than a two-car wreck?
Investigators have to establish the order in which each vehicle struck another, which usually means pulling data from multiple drivers, witnesses and sometimes a truck's onboard systems before fault can be assigned.
What typically triggers a pile-up involving multiple vehicles?
These crashes commonly start with one vehicle slowing or stopping unexpectedly, usually because of congestion, a mechanical failure or a smaller collision, and the vehicles behind it don't have enough room or time to stop.
How does one crash turn into a chain reaction?
Once the lead vehicle slows or stops, each following driver has only a short window to react. Tailgating, distraction or limited visibility can turn what should be a single fender-bender into several impacts in quick succession.
What can drivers do if traffic ahead suddenly slows on a road like this one?
Leaving extra space between vehicles and watching brake lights farther down the road, not just the car directly ahead, gives drivers more time to react before a slowdown becomes a collision.
