Why Ramp and Connector Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Crashes on highway connectors and entrance ramps—like the Route 20 access to I-91—pose unique challenges due to high speeds, tight curves, and merging traffic. Drivers must make quick adjustments in narrow spaces, and a moment of misjudgment can result in vehicles leaving the road or colliding at awkward angles.
When a vehicle ends up in a ditch or down an embankment, the risk of entrapment increases. Fire crews often need to perform extrications using specialized tools, which can delay access to injured occupants.
Traffic flow, road design, and driver behavior are all evaluated in such incidents to determine contributing factors. These areas often benefit from enhanced signage and reduced speed zones to help prevent similar crashes.
