El Dorado County, CA (May 28, 2026) – A woman and a 5-year-old boy lost their lives after an SUV went off Highway 50 and entered the American River in El Dorado County. The fatal crash happened around 4 p.m. near Ice House Road along the south side of the river during rainy weather conditions.
According to the California Highway Patrol, four people were inside the Hyundai SUV when it left the roadway on a curve, traveled down an embankment, and came to rest in the water near the shoreline. Investigators identified the woman who died at the site as 35-year-old Maria Fife of Tracy. The young boy later died in a hospital.
An 11-year-old boy was reported to have serious injuries, while a 41-year-old man from Tracy was believed to have minor harm. Troopers said unsafe speed for wet roadway conditions is considered a likely factor, while alcohol use was ruled out.
Investigators continue reviewing the deadly collision and the roadway conditions at the time. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of those who died in the crash.
How Wet Weather Can Increase the Risk of Vehicles Leaving the Road
Rain can make highways more dangerous by reducing tire traction and limiting a driver’s ability to control a vehicle through curves. Fresh rainfall is especially hazardous because oil and debris on the pavement can rise to the surface, creating slippery driving conditions within minutes.
SUVs and larger vehicles may also become harder to control at high speeds on wet roads. When a vehicle leaves the pavement near rivers, embankments, or steep shoulders, the chance of severe injuries can rise sharply. Water-related crashes may also delay rescue efforts because crews must safely reach occupants while dealing with unstable terrain and fast-moving water. Drivers are often urged to reduce speed during rainstorms and increase following distance to lower the risk of losing control.
