What Pedestrians and Drivers Should Know About Crosswalk Laws in Georgia
Georgia law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians who are lawfully within a marked crosswalk. However, pedestrians who cross outside of a marked crosswalk in an area between two intersections are generally required to yield to oncoming traffic. This distinction can affect how a crash is reviewed and what, if any, legal responsibility is assigned to each party.
Crossing outside a marked crosswalk at night or in low-light conditions significantly increases the risk of being struck. Drivers have less time to detect a pedestrian who is not in an expected crossing zone, and reaction distances at normal road speeds can be shorter than people assume. Even with headlights on, spotting a person mid-road in the early morning hours can be genuinely difficult.
DeKalb County roads like Candler Road carry steady traffic at various hours, including overnight. Pedestrian crashes on multi-lane roads without marked crossings tend to involve higher speeds and less predictable vehicle movements than those at controlled intersections.
