Franklin Borough, NJ (June 20, 2026) –  The Franklin Borough Police are investigating a fatal accident that killed a woman and left several other people injured in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 23 and Mabie Street in Franklin Borough.

Emergency units responded to the crash shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 18. Upon arrival, responders located the driver of a Ford SUV and a teenage passenger, both suffering from serious injuries. A preliminary investigation found that the Ford SUV was struck on the driver’s side by a northbound dump truck. The impact pushed the SUV into the southbound lanes of Route 23, where it was struck again on the driver’s side by a southbound Toyota SUV.

After the collision, the dump truck continued northbound for a short distance before leaving the roadway, striking a utility pole, and coming to rest in the backyard of a nearby residence. The utility pole damage disrupted electrical service in the area and led to traffic detours while repairs were completed. The driver of the Ford SUV and the juvenile passenger were airlifted separately to a trauma center for treatment.

The woman driving the Ford later died from her injuries. Her identity has not been released. The driver of the Toyota SUV suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, while the dump truck driver reported injuries and was evaluated at a medical center. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Why Side-Impact Crashes Tend to Result in Serious Injuries

Side-impact collisions can be particularly dangerous because there is generally less space between vehicle occupants and the point of impact. When a vehicle is struck on the side, crash forces can be transferred directly into the passenger compartment.

Crashes involving multiple vehicles may also create secondary impacts, increasing the severity of injuries. A vehicle that is pushed into another lane of traffic can become involved in additional collisions before coming to rest.

Investigators reviewing these crashes examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, traffic patterns, and the sequence of impacts. These details can help determine how the collision unfolded and what factors contributed to the incident.
