Why Police Pursuits Can Increase the Risk of Secondary Collisions
Police pursuits can create rapidly changing traffic conditions for everyone on nearby roads. Drivers may have little time to react when a fleeing vehicle enters intersections, changes direction suddenly, or travels at excessive speeds.
After a pursuit-related collision, investigators typically review patrol vehicle camera footage, witness statements, roadway evidence, and the sequence of the chase. They may also examine vehicle damage, traffic conditions, and the actions of everyone involved to determine how the collision occurred. These reviews help establish the facts of the case while also identifying circumstances that may improve public safety during future pursuit incidents.
