Opelousas, LA (May 24, 2026) – A two-vehicle wreck on Louisiana Highway 190 near Jennings Road claimed the life of 19-year-old Courtney Hodge of Texas on Friday, May 22. State police said the fatal crash happened shortly after 3 p.m.
According to preliminary findings, a 2005 Kenworth commercial motor vehicle was traveling west on Highway 190 and slowing near a crossover. At the same time, a 2025 Kia K4 driven by Hodge was traveling behind the truck. Investigators said the Kia failed to slow and struck the rear of the larger vehicle.
Hodge died at the roadway. A toxicology sample was collected as part of standard procedure and submitted for analysis. No additional injuries were mentioned in the initial report.
Troopers are still working to determine all factors connected to the collision.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends mourning this tragic loss.
Why Rear-End Highway Accidents Can Become Severe
Rear-end roadway impacts involving large commercial vehicles can lead to serious harm because of the major size and weight differences between vehicles. When traffic slows unexpectedly, drivers following behind may have little time to react if safe distance is not maintained. Even moderate speeds can lead to severe damage when a smaller passenger car strikes a heavy truck.
Investigators often review braking distance, vehicle spacing, roadway markings, and traffic flow after this type of crash. Mechanical condition, visibility, and driver reaction times may also help explain how the sequence unfolded. Data from onboard vehicle systems can sometimes provide timing details about speed or braking before contact occurred. These reviews help create a clearer picture of what happened in the moments leading up to the roadway emergency.
