Chesterton, IN (July 1, 2026) – A woman died following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Indiana 49 and County Road 600N early on Monday evening, June 29. The wreck happened at approximately 5:56 p.m.

A 2024 Tesla truck traveling westbound on C.R. 600N collided with a 2017 Nissan passenger vehicle heading southbound on Indiana 49. The female driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead following the accident.

No further details about the circumstances leading up to the crash or the identity of the woman killed were included in the initial report. The driver of the Tesla truck was not mentioned in connection with any injuries.

The collision is being examined by the Crash Reconstruction Unit. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the woman who lost her life.

What Does a Crash Reconstruction Unit Do After a Fatal Intersection Crash?

Crash reconstruction specialists are called in when a collision is serious enough to warrant a detailed technical investigation beyond standard reporting. These teams use measurements, vehicle data, and physical evidence from the roadway to mathematically recreate the sequence of events leading up to and through the crash. Their findings can help determine vehicle speeds, points of impact, and whether any evasive action was taken before contact.

Intersection crashes involving two vehicles traveling in perpendicular directions are among the most studied collision types in traffic safety. The angle of impact in a T-bone or broadside crash can cause severe injury to occupants on the struck side of a vehicle, since that side typically has less structural protection than the front or rear. Investigators examine both vehicles carefully to understand which part of each made first contact.

Electric vehicles, such as newer Tesla models, may carry on-board data logs that record speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments before a crash. This information can be retrieved by investigators and used alongside traditional physical evidence to build a more complete picture of what happened. These data sources have become an increasingly important tool in modern crash reconstruction work.
