Why Alleyway Crashes Involving Large Service Vehicles Can Be Dangerous
Alleys and service access roads can present unique safety risks because they are often narrow and have limited visibility. Garbage trucks and other large utility vehicles may have blind spots that make it difficult to see objects or people close to the vehicle, especially during early morning hours when lighting conditions are poor.
Pedestrian crashes involving heavy-duty service vehicles are frequently severe due to the size and weight of the truck. In urban areas, alleyways may also have uneven pavement, parked vehicles, dumpsters, or tight turning spaces that reduce maneuverability. Investigators commonly review vehicle positioning, driver visibility, roadway lighting, and surveillance footage when examining how these collisions occur and whether environmental factors contributed to the fatal outcome.
