Jefferson Co., TX (June 15, 2026) – A 45-year-old Beaumont woman was killed late Saturday night, June 13, after she was struck while walking on Interstate 10 West in Jefferson County, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Donta Miller identified the woman as Lorena Christian. Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. said she died at the scene shortly before 11:45 p.m. and ordered an autopsy.
Miller said the driver stopped after striking Christian. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Interstate 10 West was closed for more than six hours while first responders worked at the scene. Westbound traffic was diverted to Highway 124 at Smith Road, and the freeway reopened shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday.
The investigation remains active. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Where the Crash Happened: Interstate 10 West between Smith Road and Boyt Road
The reported location is Interstate 10 West between Smith Road and Boyt Road in Jefferson County. This is a freeway setting where vehicles typically move at higher speeds and where pedestrians are especially exposed because the roadway is designed for motor vehicle traffic.
The closure and traffic diversion also show how much space investigators needed to safely work on the westbound lanes. On an interstate, scene documentation often requires blocking traffic long enough to protect responders, preserve roadway evidence, and allow investigators to measure and photograph the area.

Why Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Require Careful Reconstruction
Pedestrian crashes on interstates are often severe because drivers may have very little time to react, especially at night and in high-speed traffic. In this case, the crash happened on Interstate 10 West, and the westbound lanes were closed for hours while investigators worked.
The length of the closure matters because investigators may need to document a wide area of roadway evidence. They may also need to determine where the pedestrian was located, where the vehicle traveled, where the impact occurred, and how the driver stopped after the collision.
How this crash is investigated
Investigators will likely review roadway evidence, vehicle damage, the point of impact, lighting conditions, witness statements, dispatch records, and any available traffic-camera or dashcam footage. Because the driver remained at the scene, investigators may also use statements and vehicle evidence to help establish the sequence.
The autopsy ordered by Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. will be part of the official review. Authorities have not released a final cause, so the crash should not be attributed to speed, impairment, visibility, distraction, or any other factor until the investigation is complete.
