Why Intersection Crashes on Rural Highways Can Be Severe
Crashes at rural highway intersections can result in serious injuries due to higher travel speeds and limited driver reaction time. Unlike urban intersections, rural junctions often have longer sight distances but fewer traffic control measures.
When two vehicles collide at or near an intersection, the angle and speed of travel can significantly influence injury severity. Side-impact collisions are especially dangerous because vehicle doors and sides offer less protection than the front or rear.
Emergency response times in rural areas can also vary depending on distance and accessibility. Investigators typically review roadway design, vehicle positioning, and witness accounts to understand how these collisions develop and whether any contributing factors were present.
