San Diego, CA (August 26, 2026) – A 66-year-old woman was seriously hurt on Monday afternoon after a vehicle being pursued by the police struck the car she occupied.
The collision happened around 4 p.m. near the 6400 block of Imperial Ave in San Diego’s O’Farrell neighborhood. Detectives said a 20-year-old man driving a Jeep Cherokee traveled eastbound on Imperial Ave before crossing into the westbound lanes.
The pursuit was later called off. The Jeep then collided head-on with a Toyota Camry driven by a 61-year-old man; the woman was in the Camry and suffered serious injuries, while the Jeep driver fled on foot after the accident but was later taken into custody. The circumstances surrounding the wreck remain under investigation.
We hope the injured woman has a steady recovery.
What Can Increase the Risk of Injuries in Head-On Crashes?
Head-on crashes can produce serious injuries because two vehicles may be traveling toward each other before contact. The combined forces can place substantial stress on vehicle occupants.
Seat belts are among the most effective protections available to drivers and passengers. They help keep people properly positioned and can reduce the risk of being thrown from a vehicle.
Modern vehicles also use airbags and reinforced passenger compartments to provide additional protection. These systems work best when occupants are properly restrained.
Drivers should remain in their designated lanes and stay alert for vehicles approaching from unexpected directions. Avoiding distractions and maintaining appropriate speeds can give motorists more time to react to changing traffic conditions.
