Vancouver, WA (September 10, 2026) – A 55-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday, September 8, after she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing a street in a marked crosswalk in the Orchards area of Clark County.

The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. at Northeast 137th Avenue and Northeast 99th Street. According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, a white 2012 Ford F-150 was traveling east on Northeast 99th Street when the driver turned right onto Northeast 137th Avenue and struck the woman as she crossed with her dog.

The woman was transported to a local hospital by AMR with serious injuries. Her dog was not injured and was later reunited with its family. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities said impairment may have been a factor, and the driver was released pending toxicology results and completion of the investigation. Portions of the roadway were closed during the response but later reopened.

Our thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this difficult time. We also hope she makes a full and speedy recovery.

How Can Drivers Improve Pedestrian Safety at Crosswalks?

Crosswalks give pedestrians a designated place to cross, but drivers still need to scan carefully for people entering or already in the roadway. Turning movements can be particularly challenging because a driver may be focused on traffic approaching from one direction while a pedestrian is crossing from another. Slowing down before a turn and checking the entire crossing area can provide more time to react.

Pedestrians can also improve their visibility by remaining alert and using designated crossings whenever possible. Making eye contact with a driver can help confirm that the vehicle has noticed the pedestrian, although pedestrians should still wait for approaching traffic to stop before entering the roadway. Walking pets on a leash and keeping attention on surrounding traffic can provide additional awareness.

Poor visibility, distractions, and unexpected traffic movements can increase the risk of a pedestrian crash. Make sure to avoid cellphone use and other distractions while approaching intersections. Maintaining a controlled speed and being prepared to stop can help reduce the likelihood and severity of a collision.
