Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In New York, pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections, though both drivers and pedestrians are expected to use caution and follow posted signals.
How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting a pedestrian?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning both sides of the road before proceeding through crosswalks, and avoiding distractions like phones give drivers more time to spot and react to people on foot.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, spinal injuries and internal injuries, since there is little protecting the body in a collision with a car.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Woodgate, NY
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until help arrives. Keep the injured person still and warm, and avoid moving them unless there's an immediate danger, since movement can worsen certain injuries. Once responders arrive, let them manage traffic and medical care, and if you're able, note details like the time, weather and road conditions while they're fresh in your mind. Anyone involved, injured or not, should follow up with a medical provider in the days after the crash to rule out injuries that aren't immediately obvious.
