Why Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Often Result in Severe Outcomes
Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous roadway collisions because vehicles approach each other from opposite directions with little time to react. The combined speed of both vehicles can greatly increase the force involved during contact.
Investigators reviewing wrong-way crashes often examine roadway entry points, traffic signage, and driver travel direction to determine how a vehicle entered opposing lanes. Lighting conditions and visibility may also be considered, especially during nighttime travel.
Physical evidence such as debris placement, vehicle damage, and tire marks can help reconstruct the movement of each vehicle before the collision occurred. Barriers, guardrails, and nearby terrain are also reviewed when a vehicle leaves the roadway after impact.
