How Wrong-Way Highway Collisions Are Investigated
Wrong-way collisions on divided highways are often reviewed in detail because they involve vehicles traveling against traffic flow at high speeds. Investigators typically examine entry points such as ramps, intersections, and nearby road connections to identify how a driver may have entered the roadway incorrectly. Lighting conditions, signage visibility, and driver behavior are also reviewed as part of the process.
Traffic camera footage, witness accounts, and vehicle positioning after impact can help reconstruct the sequence of events. These cases may also include a review of possible impairment or medical emergencies that could have contributed to the driving error. Highway closures are common during these investigations as crews document the roadway and remove damaged vehicles before lanes can safely reopen.
