Tampa, FL (June 2, 2026) – A deadly multi-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 275 after a wrong-way driver collided with several vehicles, leaving one man dead and others involved in the chain of impacts.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 21-year-old Tampa man driving a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling the wrong direction on I-275 when he caused a series of collisions. Investigators said the driver had previously been involved in two hit-and-run incidents before continuing in the wrong direction on the interstate.
The Silverado struck nearly head-on with a Toyota Corolla driven by a 24-year-old Tampa man. Both vehicles overturned, and the Silverado caught fire. As the Corolla rolled, it struck a Toyota Camry driven by a 26-year-old Wesley Chapel man, which then impacted another Toyota Camry driven by a 38-year-old Tampa man.
The Corolla driver died at the scene. The wrong-way driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. The other drivers involved were not reported injured. Charges are expected as the investigation continues.
What Makes Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Especially Severe
Wrong-way crashes on divided highways are among the most dangerous types of collisions because they often involve direct, high-speed impacts with little time for drivers to react. These incidents frequently occur at night or during low-visibility conditions, but can happen at any time when a driver enters the roadway incorrectly.
Investigators typically examine entry points onto the highway, driver impairment, signage visibility, and prior driving behavior when reviewing these cases. Chain-reaction impacts are also common when multiple vehicles are involved, especially on congested interstate corridors. The severity of injuries in these crashes is often linked to combined speed and the angle of impact.
