Fatal Crashes on North Carolina’s US 64 Corridor: What to Know
U.S. 64 is one of North Carolina’s major east-west highways, passing through several counties east of Raleigh, including Wake County near Zebulon. The road carries a significant volume of traffic daily, mixing local commuters with long-distance drivers at highway speeds. Sections of the corridor near smaller towns often feature a combination of high-speed travel and frequent cross-street access points, which can increase crash risk.
Fatal accidents on this stretch of U.S. 64 are not uncommon, and lane closures following serious crashes can affect traffic for miles in either direction. When a fatality occurs, westbound or eastbound lanes may be shut down for hours to allow a thorough scene review. Drivers traveling through the area are generally advised to monitor traffic alerts and allow extra time when incidents are reported along the route.
