Why Crosswalk Safety Is Especially Important at Signalized Intersections
Marked crosswalks and pedestrian signals are designed to help people cross busy roads more safely, but drivers and pedestrians must remain alert at all times. Turning vehicles can create conflicts, particularly when motorists focus on oncoming traffic and fail to notice someone already in the crosswalk.
Many intersections use dedicated walk signals to indicate when it is safe to cross. Even with these signals, visibility, weather, traffic volume, and driver attention can affect safety. Pedestrians are encouraged to make eye contact with approaching drivers before stepping into the roadway whenever possible, while motorists should slow down before turning and carefully check crosswalks for people who may have the legal right of way. Increased awareness from everyone using the roadway can help reduce serious pedestrian injuries.
