Pedestrian Crashes on Major Roads Can Turn Fatal Quickly
Pedestrian crashes on major roads can be severe because vehicles frequently travel through busy corridors at steady speeds. A person on foot has no protection during contact with a moving vehicle, so even one impact can cause life-threatening harm.
Areas near large intersections can add more risk. Drivers may be watching traffic signals, turning vehicles, lane changes, and nearby crosswalks while pedestrians move through or near the roadway. When more than one pedestrian is involved, the crash may require a wider review of the road layout and traffic movement.
Evening conditions can also affect visibility. Headlights, shadows, traffic volume, and road lighting may change how quickly drivers and pedestrians notice each other. After a serious pedestrian accident, reviews usually focus on lighting, lane position, vehicle speed, and where each person was before contact.
