Charleston, SC (August 3, 2026) – One person died, and two others suffered minor burns after an early-morning fire severely damaged a two-story apartment building at the Middleton Cove complex on Ashley River Road, according to the Charleston Fire Department. Several 911 calls came in shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, and firefighters arrived within minutes to find flames coming from the 18-unit building.

Crews helped residents evacuate before the building became too unsafe to enter, then continued fighting the fire from outside. Two residents were initially unaccounted for; a car belonging to one of them was later found at the site. After a search that lasted into the afternoon, a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office K-9 located one deceased victim. The coroner had not released the person’s identity as of Sunday evening, and one resident remained unaccounted for.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to 19 people whose homes were damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.

Why Are K-9 Units Sometimes Used in Fire Search Efforts?

Dogs trained for search work can detect human scent even through significant debris, which makes them valuable in situations where a building’s structure has partially or fully collapsed. Their sense of smell can detect cues that visual search alone might miss, especially in a large or heavily damaged space.

These searches move slowly and carefully, since crews need to make sure any remaining structure is stable enough to search safely. Handlers work closely with their dogs, interpreting subtle behavioral cues that indicate the dog has detected something significant.

This kind of search can take hours, particularly in a multi-unit building where debris may be spread across a wide area. Even with a trained K-9, thoroughly and safely covering an entire structure takes time, especially when crews are also managing lingering hazards like heat, smoke, or unstable framing.
