Austin, TX (August 3, 2026) — An adult male pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle at Montopolis Drive and the northbound Bastrop Highway service road in Southeast Austin on Saturday, August 1.

The collision occurred around 5:16 a.m., according to the Austin Police Department. Emergency personnel transported the pedestrian to a hospital, where he later died.

The police had not released the pedestrian’s identity. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We extend our condolences to the pedestrian’s family and loved ones.

Where the Crash Happened: Montopolis Dr and Bastrop Hwy Service Rd

Montopolis Drive meets the northbound service road of Bastrop Highway in Southeast Austin. The location combines traffic moving along a frontage road with vehicles entering, leaving, or crossing through the Montopolis Drive intersection.

Service-road intersections can create several conflict points because motorists may be watching through traffic, turning vehicles, and nearby roadway users at the same time. The intersection layout and traffic controls will be relevant to determining how each party approached the crossing area.

What We Know

  • The crash occurred at approximately 5:16 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The pedestrian was described as an unidentified adult male.
  • He was taken to a hospital and later died.
  • The Austin Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Unit is investigating.

Why Pedestrian Crashes at Service-Road Intersections Can Be Severe

Pedestrians have no protective structure when struck by a motor vehicle. At an intersection connecting a city street with a highway service road, differences in traffic speed and turning movements can further increase the risk of serious injury.

For this collision, investigators will need to establish where the pedestrian and vehicle were positioned before impact. The initial report does not identify the pedestrian’s direction of travel, the vehicle’s movement, or which part of the intersection contained the point of contact.

How This Crash Is Investigated

Investigators may document vehicle damage, roadway evidence, lighting conditions, traffic controls, and the location where the pedestrian was struck. Those details can help establish the vehicle’s direction and reconstruct the sequence leading to the collision.

Police may also compare the driver’s account with witness statements and any available camera or vehicle data. Because the pedestrian later died, the Vehicular Homicide Unit is handling the investigation, but the preliminary report does not assign responsibility.

What to Do After a Fatal Collision

Family members and other eligible parties may need the official crash report to understand what investigators documented. Medical records, photographs, insurance correspondence, and other incident-related materials should be preserved while the investigation is underway.

Texas crash reports are maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation through the Crash Records Information System. Reports may be purchased through the CRIS Public Portal at cris.dot.state.tx.us/public/Purchase. The crash report is Form CR-3, while Form CR-91 is used for requests submitted by mail.

A regular report costs $6, and a certified report costs $8. Online CRIS purchases may be paid by credit or debit card. Officers have 10 days to file, followed by approximately four business days of TxDOT processing. Reports are often available within seven to 10 business days.

Parties with a proper interest may receive an unredacted report. Other requesters receive a redacted copy under Texas Transportation Code § 550.065(c). Texas does not have a fixed public-release window because access and redaction depend on the requester’s eligibility.
