Tampa, FL (August 10, 2026) – A 61-year-old Tampa man died Saturday, August 8, after a 27-foot boat carrying two people struck a rock jetty near Picnic Island Park.

Both occupants were ejected into the water during the collision. One person swam to shore and was taken to a nearby hospital after being injured.

The second occupant, identified as David A. Hochberg, 61, of Tampa, was later recovered from the water and pronounced dead. Emergency units went to the location following the accident.

The investigation into what led to the wreck remains underway, with additional details expected as the case develops.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of David A. Hochberg.

What Should Boaters Know About Avoiding Rock Jetties?

Rock jetties can create serious hazards for boaters, especially when visibility is poor or vessels travel close to shore. These structures may extend farther into the water than they appear from a distance, making it harder to judge safe passage.

Boaters should maintain a safe speed and keep a proper lookout for fixed structures, shallow water, other vessels, and changing conditions. Navigation lights and charts can help identify hazards, particularly during nighttime travel. Wearing a properly fitted life jacket can also reduce the risk of drowning if someone falls into the water.

Keeping passengers seated and avoiding sudden movements can provide additional stability while a boat is underway. Operators should also remain attentive and avoid distractions that could interfere with their ability to steer safely.
