Jacksonville, FL (May 24, 2026) – A 50-year-old Jacksonville man was killed early Saturday, May 23, after a crash near the entrance ramp to I-295 North on the city’s Westside. It happened around 3:35 a.m. at 103rd Street and the I-295 northbound ramp.
Troopers said a westbound SUV on 103rd Street ran a red light and struck another SUV turning left onto the I-295 northbound ramp. The first SUV rotated and overturned after the strike. The 50-year-old driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 18-year-old driver was not hurt.
The inquiry into what led to the wreck is still underway, and further details will be shared as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the man who lost his life.
What Typically Contributes to Red-Light Intersection Roadway Outcomes
Intersections with traffic signals require drivers to watch for changing lights and turning movements. When a driver continues through a red light, crossing paths with a turning SUV can create a high-risk traffic scenario. Left turns onto highway ramps often require careful timing because multiple lanes may have moving traffic from different directions. Rollovers can occur when a higher-profile vehicle is struck at an angle, shifting its balance during movement. Seatbelt use is a key factor in reducing the risk of fatal harm during sudden directional changes or overturns. Lighting conditions before sunrise can also reduce visibility, making it harder to judge distance and speed. Road users benefit from staying alert, especially where ramps connect to busy corridors. Small timing errors can significantly increase risk in such environments.
