What Can Make Head-On Highway Crashes So Severe?
Head-on roadway collisions often lead to serious harm because both vehicles may be moving at significant speeds before contact occurs. The force created when two vehicles meet front-first can increase the chance of major injuries, even when seat belts and airbags are used properly.
Rural highways can present added risks due to narrow lanes, curves, limited lighting, and fewer barriers separating traffic. Drivers who drift across the center line may have little time to correct their path before another vehicle approaches.
Medical crews usually check for injuries involving the chest, legs, neck, and head after these types of wrecks. Some symptoms may not appear immediately, especially after adrenaline wears off. Vehicle positioning, skid marks, and roadway markings can also help provide a clearer picture of how the wreck unfolded.
