What Can Lead to Head-On Highway Collisions?
Head-on roadway crashes are among the most serious types of traffic accidents because both vehicles may be moving at high speeds before contact occurs. These collisions can happen after a driver crosses the center line due to fatigue, distraction, medical problems, or impaired driving. Dark conditions during overnight and early morning hours may also reduce visibility and reaction time.
After a fatal highway wreck, investigators usually review roadway markings, vehicle positions, and witness statements. Damage to both vehicles may help show how the vehicles moved before contact occurred. Crews may also examine weather conditions and whether either driver attempted to brake or avoid the other vehicle. Early reports often provide only limited details while additional findings are collected and reviewed.
