What Is Investigated After a Fatal Hit-and-Run?
Investigators in fatal hit-and-run cases may examine roadway evidence, vehicle parts, tire marks, and damage left behind. Nearby businesses, homes, and traffic cameras can also provide useful video footage if available. Witness accounts may help establish the direction of travel and describe a vehicle that left before its occupants could be identified.
Investigators may also review vehicle registration records and compare descriptions with reports from people who saw vehicles in the vicinity. Physical evidence can sometimes connect a vehicle to a person or establish where the vehicle traveled after leaving. The amount of evidence available varies based on the roadway, traffic volume, camera coverage, and how quickly witnesses report what they saw.
