Creek County, OK (July 27, 2026) – One person died after an early-morning traffic accident along I-44 in Creek County on July 26.

According to available information, the crash happened at about 4:24 a.m. when an eastbound vehicle left the roadway and struck another vehicle that was parked on the right shoulder of I-44. The parked vehicle overturned and came to rest partially on the interstate.

Paul Schultz, 63, of San Diego, California, was riding as a passenger in the moving vehicle. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the site. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was injured and received medical treatment, while the driver of the parked vehicle was uninjured.

The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators continue to gather information.

Our heartfelt sympathies are with Paul Schultz’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Why Parked Vehicles on Highway Shoulders Can Still Be at Risk

Stopping on a highway shoulder can be necessary during emergencies, but it still carries significant risks. Fast-moving traffic, limited visibility, driver fatigue, and distractions can all increase the chances of a vehicle leaving its lane and entering the shoulder unexpectedly.

When stopping is unavoidable, drivers are generally encouraged to move as far from travel lanes as possible, activate hazard lights, and remain alert to approaching traffic. In some cases, it may be safer to exit the vehicle and wait behind a guardrail if conditions allow. Investigators also review roadway conditions, vehicle positions, visibility, and witness statements to better understand how these types of highway crashes occur and whether any contributing factors played a role.
